What is the S500?

The IICRC S500 is the industry Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration. It is created by a group of volunteers in the restoration industry, each with a diverse background. After a peer review process, it receives ANSI accreditation and is published by the IICRC. The standard is on the 5th Edition, published in 2021, and is used by everyone who participates in the restoration and insurance repair industries including contractors, insurance professionals, attorneys, legislatures and more!

If you are engaging in water damage restoration work, you should have a copy of the standard and be familiar with it.

Should I also take a WRT class?

The Water Restoration Technician course is based on the standard, and teaches technical restoration concepts. If you want to learn water damage restoration, the WRT class is great!

Is it a step-by-step guide?

The standard is not a step-by-step guide, but it “describes the procedures to be followed and the precautions to be taken when performing water damage restoration in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, and the systems and personal property contained within those structures.”
