The IICRC stands for the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. The IICRC is a non-profit organization that certifies, produces and oversees standards for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industries.
The IICRC produces standards on varying topics. These standards include the “ANSI S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration” and the “ANSI S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation”. ANSI is the American National Standards Institute and, in short, means each standard produced by the IICRC is peer reviewed and agreed upon by industry professionals. See a full list of available standards and to purchase a subscription to access all the current and past standards. (If you sign up for a subscription, use our code “REME”. This lets the IICRC know who sent you!)
The IICRC also offers certifications for individuals who take education courses and pass an exam. These certifications include Water Restoration Technician (WRT), Applied Structural Drying Technician (ASD) and Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT). There are many other certifications you can obtain through the IICRC. To earn a certification, a student must take an approved course by an approved school and instructor. The IICRC does not offer education directly, only through their approved schools and instructors. Remediation Training & Consulting is an approved IICRC school, and we offer many certification courses.
Multiple IICRC courses are now offered online via live-stream classes. These classes require students to participate in class and take an exam, just like an in person class. While most classes are available in the live-stream format, some classes like ASD, are not available online, and must be taken in person.
The IICRC doesn’t just certify individuals, they certify businesses. Businesses can apply to become a Certified Firm with the IICRC. To apply, a business must have at least one certified and active technician, have the proper insurance coverage and business licenses, and pay an application fee. (Note that these requirements change from time to time, check the IICRC website for the latest requirements). Certified Firms have several benefits. These include being listed on the IICRC global locator list, free monthly webinars on industry topics, Google verification, and use of the IICRC Certified Firm logo on your vehicles, business cards, website and more. These show your customers that you have gone through the application process and have been vetted by the IICRC so you can take care of them.
