IICRC Odor Control Technician (OCT)

The IICRC OCT (Odor Control Technician) is a one day course that covers olfaction and odor, odor sources, detection process, theory of odor control, equipment, chemical options and applications. The student will learn how to address odors caused from biological sources such as decomposition, urine contamination, mold, and combustion sources such as fire and smoke damage, chemical sources such as fuel oil spills or volatile organic chemicals.

The IICRC OCT course teaches the principles of odor control on restoration projects. Issues with odors and smells are often found on restoration projects. This class teaches restorers how they can identify, understand and remove odors from job sites.

Should I take the OCT Course?
The IICRC OCT certification is a one-day course that teaches students the principles and foundations of odor control. This course is often paired with the Fire & Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) course, as many of the principles taught have overlapping information. In addition, many fire and smoke projects deal with odors. We offer an FSRT/OCT combo class that are taken consecutively the same week!
After taking the Odor Control Technician course, students will have the opportunity to take the IICRC exam. After passing the exam, the student will receive their certification. Our OCT course prepares students for the exam following class and, more importantly, for real-world applications.
IICRC OCT is Required for the Master Fire & Smoke Restorer and Master Textile Cleaner Designation
The Odor Control Technician certification is required to earn the IICRC Master Fire & Smoke Restorer and Master Textile Cleaner designations.

The IICRC requires students to attend the full duration of the Odor Control class to be eligible for the exam. If students don’t finish the course, they will not be allowed to take the exam.
Students must use a computer or tablet to view the certification class.
Students can take the IICRC OCT exam up to 45-days after class through the IICRC online exam portal. For in person classes, students will take the exam on the last day of class.
Each state has different contractor and licensing requirements. You will need to comply with your local and state laws. The odor control course is a technical course that teaches the science and principles of odor but is independent of state licensing requirements.
The IICRC OCT certification doesn’t expire as long as it is are renewed. There is a yearly renewal fee paid to the IICRC, and 14 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) are required every 4-years.

After the course, students may take the OCT exam. Upon passing the exam, the student will be issued an IICRC certification and a certificate will be mailed to you to display! Students can take the exam after attending an OCT course with LearnToRestore.com.
How much is the IICRC OCT exam fee?
The OCT exam fee is $80.
Can I use notes on the exam?
The IICRC Odor Control exam is a closed book and closed notes exam.
When do I take the OCT exam?
Students attending the live-stream OCT course complete the exam online after the class through the IICRC exam portal. You have 45 days to complete the exam after class ends.
Students attending the in-person course will complete the exam on the last day of class.
Can I retake the OCT exam?
You have three attempts to pass the OCT exam. Each exam attempt has an $80 exam fee. If you fail the third attempt, you will need to take the OCT class again before an additional exam retake. If you fail the exam three times and need to take the class again, we will put you in a refresher class for free!
